Here are ten tips on choosing the right window blinds for you:

Do you need privacy or a blind that blocks out light? If so, get a type that blocks light, such as a wood blind, mini blind, vertical blind or blackout blind.

Do you need privacy but still want light to come through the window? You can now get window coverings that let light through, but block the view to the inside.

Do you need adjustable light? If you want to be able to adjust the amount of light that comes into your window, you can do that by adjusting slats. Just get blinds with slats, such as mini blinds or any number of horizontal blinds.

Do you have small children or pets in the house that could be harmed by cords with loops? If so, get blinds with child/pet safe cords.

Do you have a sliding door you need to cover? A sliding door needs a blind that opens from side to side rather than up and down. This calls for a vertical blind – they now come in a huge variety of styles and materials.

Do you need insulation qualities in your window covering? If your window gets blazing sun most of the year, or you need to block out the frigid cold, you’ll need to get a blind that insulates so you can stay comfortable and save energy.

Is appearance important – or not? Decide how much it matters if the blind is stylish and adds to the room’s décor, or if function is more important than looks. You can get stunning blinds that add color, warmth and major impact to rooms, or blinds that disappear into the background. The choice is yours.

Is ease of cleaning important, or not? If you have allergies, you’d be better off getting blinds that don’t collect dust (such as verticals). If you have physical disabilities or limitations, you also need blinds that are easy to clean and don’t require much effort or reach. However, it could be that you have tons of energy and love spending time keeping the house spic and span, in which case, a higher maintenance blind is not a problem for you.

Is price a serious consideration? Some people need just a basic, plain blind to cover the windows at the lowest price possible. And if its not going to be used much, quality is not that critical. Others want the best value they can get for the best price. While for some people, price is not a consideration, they simply want the best blind they can get that is perfect for their home and their needs, no matter what the price.

Special requirements? Is the window a special shape, such as arched or triangular? Is the window extremely high, so you’ll need a special way to open it? Do you need motorized blinds?

There are blinds for every need and purpose. Take time to familiarize yourself with what is available on the market. What’s important is that you understand your needs, budget and preferences before you shop. With a little forethought and planning, you’ll get the perfect window blinds for you.

If you’ve compared the prices of quality blinds to budget or discount blinds, you may have balked. Why pay top dollar when you can get budget blinds for so much less? But then you heard that little voice in the back of your head saying, “Wait a minute, you get what you pay for, remember.”

Still, the lower price of the discount blinds is so tempting… So how much of a difference is there? Are discount blinds really inferior?

At first glance, it’s hard to tell the difference between expensive blinds and lower-priced versions, but there are certain important things to compare when buying blinds.

Here are some of the differences:

Budget blind manufacturers often use cheaper hardware, so your blind is more apt to fall apart.

The mechanisms that retract the blind or shade are also made of lower quality materials and tend to fail sooner.

Headers are usually not included. The header is the strip at the top of the blind that covers or hides the hardware.

Lower quality finishes are used. That means there are fewer coats of lacquer or paint. In the case of paint, it is usually sprayed on rather than baked on for a hard enamel finish. Ultimately, this means the finish could flake off, peal off or wipe off with repeated cleanings.

Low-cost plastic mini blinds may look charming today, but plastic does tend to sag over time.

Faux wood blinds may look great at first blush, but they are made of plastic and over time will sag just like plastic mini blinds. Is that a look you can live with in a year or two?

Customization is usually not available with cheaper blinds, so the fit may be poor and not block out light sufficiently, or be too long or too short.

Of course, you’ll have to weigh what is more important to you – long-lasting durability or lower price. Sometimes budgetary concerns outweigh everything else. But if you can, it’s probably better to spend a few dollars more and buy higher quality.

Mini blinds are notorious for collecting dust. Their horizontal position creates a flat surface for dust to land on. In addition, they’re almost always next to an open window, bringing in more dust with the breezes. What is the best way to clean all that dust off your blinds?

If your blinds are simply dusty, it’s easy to dust them. Be sure to close the slats so that the tops face the inside of the room and then vacuum them with the brush attachment. This will suck up the loose dust and leave your blinds looking nice and clean. (It’s much easier to close the blinds and make a flat surface than vacuum the blinds while open and horizontal.)

You can also use a lamb’s wool duster, as lamb’s wool naturally attracts dust and can help prevent buildup as well. For fabric blinds, vacuuming up the dust is the best method so you don’t rub the dust and dirt into the fabric.

You can also purchase special vacuum cleaner attachments with four prongs covered with fuzzy material that picks up dust. Some attachments even suck up the dust.

Don’t use a feather duster, as this just shakes the dust onto nearby furniture. Try an electrostatic dusters that picks up the dust and holds it long enough to get all the dust off, then shake the duster out in a bag or outside.

For extra dusty wood, aluminum or faux window blinds, try using a soft paintbrush to brush away the dust particles. It helps to place newspapers or a sheet underneath the blinds in order to catch the falling particles. Windex wipes are also great for non-porous surfaces.

If your blinds need more than a dusting, you’ll have to be more aggressive. Vinyl or aluminum blinds may need a good soak to remove grime. If they are wood, do not get them wet (or they will warp).

Take them down and soak them in a tub of either strong dishsoap, lysol or ammonia. Scrub them gently with a soft sponge after they soak for 20 – 30 minutes, being careful not to bend them. Don’t use a kitchen scrubber, as this will mar the surface. Use only a soft sponge, dishrag, or microfiber cloth.

Rinse well and dry outdoors or hang over the tub until dry.

If you don’t want to take your blinds down, try wiping them with a soft sponge dipped into a solution of 1 tablespoon ammonia per 1 quart water.

For wood blinds, wipe with a soft damp sponge or use lemon oil on a soft cloth. For lipstick, crayon marks or stickers or any kind of gummy residue, try “Goo Gone,” a biodegradable citrus cleaner that easily removes grease, gum, tar, crayon, tape and label residue and much more from most surfaces.

After the blinds are clean and dry, lightly rub a dryer sheet over the blinds to remove static. This insures that dust will no longer be attracted to the blinds.

That’s all it takes to clean mini blinds!
